Suede
The Great Lost Singles Compilation
December 2023
Compiled By: Steve Bateman

As 'The Great Lost Singles' editorials for both Ash and the Manic Street Preachers were well-received by R*E*P*E*A*T readers, I felt it was high time that I moved onto another of my all-time favourite and most beloved bands, who comparably, have an equally as precious, awe-inspiring and irresistible body of work, as well as a storied history. To see if it would also be possible to curate a career-spanning selection of 'Great Lost Singles' from the singular, uncompromising, Britpop instigators and London legends' increasingly impressive oeuvre - the ingenious sound of Suede.

Because remarkably, since their glorious reformation in 2010, the quintet's 2022 post-punk infused ninth studio album, Autofiction, is justifiably considered by many, to be a modern classic and the best record from their comeback years so far - and that's saying something! Masterfully elevated by the artistry, brilliance and individual talents of each band member, the critically-acclaimed long player debuted at #2 in the UK Albums Chart and marked Suede’s highest charting LP since 1999’s Head Music. And now - for collectors - a special, newly packaged and expanded deluxe limited edition 3CD set is scheduled to be reissued on December 8 via BMG, which will function as a wonderful supplement to all of the previously-released Autofiction multiformats.

But, returning to my initial compilation idea, I must first stress however that these potential single choices (a handful of which would necessitate 7" edits), are my personal preferences only. And, as mentioned in previous articles, my goal with each of these features really, is to attempt to fire the imagination of, and spur on, other fans to create, sequence and title their very own collections to play and enjoy, then share them online if they so wish.

Especially as Suede have long been associated with impassioned and obsessive adulation / idolisation. Outsiders who are true cult heroes to their fanbase - a bunch of like-minded and generational devotees, who are affectionately nicknamed 'Suede Heads', or more latterly, 'The Insatiable Ones'. Who - just like the group themselves - all reside in what Brett Anderson once perceptively and thoughtfully coined as 'Suedeworld'.

So, without further ado, here is the (I hope) rather apt name that I have opted to baptise 'The Great Lost Singles' album with, plus all of the phenomenal, magnetising and unforgettable Suede songs (pre and post reunion deep cuts, B-sides, fan favourites, unsung gems) that make up the tracklisting. A diverse variety of authentic and original recordings, which are comprised of music, lyrics and melodies, that not only perfectly demonstrate and reinforce the sheer breadth and depth that can be found in great quantities of the band's Discography. But, which I truly believe, could have each been timeless A-sides in their own right and sounded spectacular blasting out of the radio...
