Kutosis - "Vultures"

Cambridge's Repeat Records have something of a knack in signing up youthful but already well-formed outfits from across the UK. Cardiff's Kutosis are another such signatory and extend Repeat's penchant for post-punk pop rock. A demo version of the band's Control Control (featured on this three-track single) was picked by BBC Radio's Steve Lamacq who played the song repeatedly on his show. Billing below the likes of Babyshambles, Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, Victorian English Gentlemen's Club and the Paddingtons followed as did interest from a variety of labels. That these rising Welsh lads chose Repeat is perhaps a sign that the label's hard work ethic is beginning to reward their efforts.

Subject matter includes Venezuela and Hugo Chaves (Vultures), 21st Century consumerism (Control Control) and American cultural imperialism (the gloriously entitled and flabby bass swaggering of Nina Vatolina that borders on psychobilly at times). Kutosis seem to share a modicum of the rougher side with Remodel from the live circuit last year and with Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys fame singing their praises they must be doing a few things right. 6/10
