Beverley Kills
e-mail interview by Rosey R*E*P*E*A*T
October 2013

Founded in the summer of 2008, Beverley Kills launched its all-girl punk-rock attack shortly after the first jam and has been gaining momentum ever since. Founded by drummer Juliette and also starring Georgie, Kate and Elisa (lead vox, guitar and b/vox and bass and b/vox respectively) the band has played all over the country, sharing bills with some notable acts, including Bleech, Grant Hart, Varsity Drag (Ben Deily Lemonheads' current project), The Slits - who dubbed BK ‘best support of the tour’ - and The Primitives.

The band’s debut EP, ‘No Cash Value’, was released on 9021GO! Records in the summer of 2010, to favourable reviews in a number of well-respected punk fanzines. Their eponymous debut album was unleashed in November 2011 and the people loved it!

On the Trail sees the band collaborate with long term fans and friends at R*E*P*E*A*T records, releasing the band (and the label's!) first ever 10'' coloured vinyl release. With song plays and interviews on BBC and other radio stations behind them, and a love of playing live, the grrrls of Beverley Kills fully intend to continue blazing their own punk rock trail.

Lucy: Your band have been quite quiet for the last few months. Are you looking forward to playing gigs again?
Katie Jane Garside: I think I give very obtuse ans

Beverley Kills – who, what and why?
Kate, Juliette, Georgie and Elisa. Guitar, drums, vox and bass. Because we can.

Describe your sound to a hard of hearing alien.
Four-way harmonies sung over crunching but melodic punk rock that shows an occasional softer side before picking up and punching you in the nose again..

Tell us a bit about the genesis of this ep.
We felt it was about time we got some more songs recorded. We each had one written so an EP seemed like the way forward.

You decided to put the ep out on red vinyl 10'', tell us a bit about this decision.
Given that option, who wouldn’t? ? It will be packaged with a CDR and a download code so even if you don’t own a record player, you can have the beeyootiful vinyl and artwork in your possession and still hear the songs. Best of all worlds!

What have you got under your sleeves?
Dried snotty tissues.

What can people expect at a Beverley Kills gig?
Noise. Fun. Dancing and some occasional pogoing.

Where do you hope that the trail you are on will lead to?
More people hearing our music and liking it. Of course some more radio play would be nice. There’s no swearing on this EP ;-)

Tell us a bit about your gigs with the great and the good.
We’ve had a few that have meant a lot to us, such as supporting The Slits, GBH, playing with Cracker - which is two of the guys from Campervan Beethoven - and Varsity Drag - Ben Deily from the original Lemonheads’ current project. Gigs with China Drum and Grant Hart from Husker Du are coming up in the next few months as well!

Who are you heroes and heroines?
This is a divisive question. But one of us would include ‘Han Solo’.

How does songwriting work in Beverley Kills?
We all write complete songs then bring them to the table to be Beverley Killed. We love the fact that we all get to have full input and each have our role in the band. We’re true equals.

What's next for the band?
Gigs! There’s the EP launch on 9th Nov at the Portland Arms in Cambridge and quite a few others in the pipeline... Details are at www.reverbnation.com/beverleykills.

How can people sample the Beverley Kills musical experience, and why should they bother?
Coming to a gig is the best way. Supporting the local music scene and discovering new bands and feeling that bass drum in your chest. And then buying some tasty merch afterwards. However you can also download our music through iTunes or buy physical copies of our releases through beverleykills.bigcartel.com.

What's best, chips or cream buns?
Again, divisive. Some would say chips. Others would say cream fucking buns.
