Cambridge Unite Against Fascism
Cambridge Says
NO EDL IN CAMBRIDGE!

Trade unionists, politicians, faith group, community leaders and individuals are asked to sign up to this unity statement, opposing the proposed march through Cambridge by the racist English Defence League on February 23rd and supporting the counter demonstration for unity and diversity organised by Cambridge Unite Against Fascism and Cambridge Trades Council.

Trade Union Motion to support our march here.

---------------------------

We the undersigned strongly oppose plans by the 'English Defence League' (EDL) - a group linked to the Fascist British National Party (BNP) and British Freedom Party (BFP) - to demonstrate in Cambridge on February 23rd.

The EDL is a racist and Fascist group dedicated to attacking Asian people and Muslims. EDL members have embarked on a violent campaign aimed at those they see as "legitimate targets". These have included in recent months attacks on Unite Against Fascism meetings in Brighton and East London, as well as intimidating staff and customers at a well known Liverpool Community Bookshop, a vicious attack on a pensioner in Barking, and assaults on a meeting in the Unite the Union offices in Liverpool and on a PCS picket line in Bootle. They have also threatened trade unionists at May day events and targeted student protesters. The EDL are deeply Islamophobic - bigoted against Muslims - which is as unacceptable as any other form of racism. The EDL's aim is to divide us by making scapegoats of one community, just as the Nazis did with the Jews in the 1930s and the National Front attempted in the 1970s.

Today they target Muslims, tomorrow it could be you!

Last year's magnificent thousand strong march and celebration of unity and diversity through Cambridge helped speed a decline in the EDL. More recent counter demonstrations in Waltham Forest, Bristol and Norwich have succeeded in marginalising the EDL, and have prevented them from marching in our City centres. This has begun to seriously demoralise them, and their organisation has started to crumble. By holding a broad, diverse, vibrant and large counter demonstration in Cambridge City Centre, we hope to be able to further hasten their decline.

There is no place for EDL racists or the BNP or BFP in Cambridge's multiracial, multicultural and multi-faith community. We need the utmost unity against their poisonous aims. We urge people to attend our march and multicultural event to be held in the city centre on February 23rd, and to oppose racism and Fascism in our City.
