Rainyday Rainbow Masters of the Cosmos
Their new ep (or 'mini LP') Masters of the Cosmos manages to capture the frenzied excitement of a Rainyday Rainbow show, allowing the listener to recreate it in the comfort of their own home. For remarkably, the recording process has managed to combine the chaotic, hypnotic live experience with an added clarity and polish I've not witnessed from them before. This allows their bizarre brilliance to be more properly experienced and enjoyed. I'm not sure I've properly appreciated earlier the outlandish originality of the lyrics, the complimentary twin attack of the vocals, the soaring guitar parts, wah-wahed, delayed compressed and saturated with utter unregulated joyful glee, or how the hard-working rhythm section manages to be both wildly creative and, simultaneously, a sensible scaffold, holding everything else in place. Just.
Expansive, frantic, thoughtful, melodic, original and totally, totally weird, Rainyday Rainbow are doing something rather different and rather special. Lend them your ears. The South Wales music scene is all the richer for them. As will be your ears.
